Three recent paintings.

'Chico' Mostly watercolor, this 8" x 10" is of our fuzzy miniature colt, born last year. I have painted little Chico inside bubbles, on bookshelves, and mixing cakes. Here he is, just being himself.

Sweet Pea. A quick little oil from a photo taken last year. She is now a year old and ives on our farm in Hardy Arkansas.

Living at the Hospital: an adventure of necessity
Last Friday, my husband went for a treadmill test at the local hospital. Just one of those routine things. The Doctors immediately booked a bed and scheduled him a quadruple bypass. He was not leaving the hospital without a refurb. As Monday was all booked up, and we really wanted a rested surgeon, Tuesday became the day of reckoning. We met several heart surgeons over the weekend including the one with my husbands case. He is called a 'cabbage' surgeon for some reason. If you know why, leave a comment. Nothing personal. All of these healers and second chance givers were humble, kind, and personable men. They are so very busy with the epidemic of deceased hearts here. Makes you wonder what is going on ? Was heart decease so prevalent before the advent of TV and electronic gadgets ? Our bodies just aren't meant for sitting still, and that's what we learn to do at age five. Take an alien look at US television ads. The ads for bad food, followed by the meds to overcome problems caused by the bad food, and then the lawyers come on insisting that we must sue for side effects caused by the medicine taken. It's what we deserve ! Turn that darn TV off .

A patient in the hospital for something as dire as a heart refurb needs rest and a decent diet you would think. The hospital is hell bend on destroying that myth. Night time is busy with blood letting, vitals taking and that lingering question 'do you need anything ?' Diet ? Lots of milk, eggs, meat and cheese. Yessir, protein is what we need. That's what we like by golly. It tastes good. Hmmmm.

Every room on our floor has a patient in it. Smiley bubbly nurses in attendance. Sort of like Disney World with a sadistic twist. 'Do you need anything?'
Out and about from floor to floor, visitors and nurses with gurneys use the elevators. The TV installed right above are a clue to how busy they are. The one time I lugged bags up the elevator, I met a young woman who said she would be living at the hospital for a month. She jogged in place while she talked, and when we stopped on floor 2 off she jogged. You do what you have to I guess. Not many people go up to the 6th floor using the stairwell. I say that with confidence , due to the crisp clean aromatic state of everything else. Huge cobwebs hang from the walls up there, with sheet rock falling loose from the ceiling. Stair climbers delight.

I much prefer to be painting. Maybe soon.

Introducing others to painting - a painting party in Newport Arkansas

Painting parties are a great way of introducing folks to painting for the first time. A nice bottle of wine, a few grapes with cheese and crackers, a handful of artists to steer, and a basic shape to paint. Just look at all the diversity. Everyone wants to do it again......

'Still There'

Did something different last week - this is the result of photo transfer technique and acrylic paint. I created a memory board and aptly named it 'Still There'. Don't you ever return to your old haunts and chidhood places just to see ? Of course they are always there, as happy memories - at least mine are.

My acrylic paints keep drying in the air conditioning - don't want to buy anything else to keep them flowing, so I beat the problem by switching to watercolors. These colorful cows are in a pasture close to my brothers house in Camp Arkansas

O.K. To be perfectly honest, this is yesterdays painting. There will be one for today before I go to bed. Busy day with gallery meeting, drive to Newport AR ( forget why) and drive home to Hardy. Feed foal, run around pasture with foal, put him back in the barn. Collapse at table, turn computer on .... and so it goes.
Oh, and I bought a paper cutter for $25.00. Great eh ?

Paint brushes make great clamps. Used the wrong type of wood filler though - I'll have to scrape it off/out again before I gesso this one.

Went into Hardy town with some empty bottles for a friend who melts them in her kiln. Got stopped by a candle maker who exchanged my bottles for these two lovely pieces of wood. So here is my accidental latest project. I bought a $5 sander from junk store. One piece is sanded already, and now the gesso goes on. I'm quietly composing a painting.

I cut some card board stencils to brighten up our old farm sign. It sits out by Highway 63 in Hardy AR.

Donkey pot and donkey cart. Did you know that Mother donkeys actually cuddle their babies with their necks ? And instead of bolting like a horse when they are spooked, they freeze up ? Our Birdie and Soopy also take care of the sheep. We have foxes around.

Scenic Highway 9

A couple of weeks ago, I went with a couple of friends on a trip around to the surrounding towns of Mountain view, Batesville and Horseshoe Bend to post fliers for our upcoming art show. Winter was very evident in the mountain trees.
Scenic Highway # 9 was breath taking, but unfortunately there were few lay-by's on the winding up and down road on which to pull over and take pictures. Our driver took our lives in her hands with a sharp U turn to a wider stretch of easment where she parked and I climbed a rock to get several shots. It was early afternoon with the sun overhead, bouncing light off of the naked branches.

Our Farm is infested with sheep

When hay became so expensive, about 5 years ago now, we looked for some little hardy animal that wasn't too fussy about the greens it ate, was easy to manage, and would compliment the equine habit. TallyHo farm is in it's second year of hair sheep, and these happy funny and prolific little animals fit the bill perfectly. So here is the newest member of the flock, born a couple of weeks ago.

I snuck up on these two in the shed and scared Birdie to death. Wasn't very fair of me really. Birdie didn't know me that well and her colt was only a day old. He's now a yearling and all over the place. Birdy, named after 'Mine that Bird', 2010 Derby winner now pushed me around like everybody else.

Last May, my family took a trip to Cannon Beach in Oregon. The day was cloudy and cool but the walk on the beach was a pleasant one. In glossy magazines showing Oregon's Cannon Beach, there is always bright sunshine. Very misleading. So here is my version - not yet raining, but going to.

Another painting featuring our cheeky little Chico. One morning I found him climbing up the round bale of hay. I wanted to see what he'd do when he got to the top of it, eaten down to about 3 feet off the ground, but when he saw me he forgot all about the climbing. Forever a mystery , but the inspiration for another Chico painting.

I took photo's on Cannon Beack in May of this year, and of course it was cloudy. I brightened everything up a bit and made the famous rock larger.....

A couple of weeks ago our little mare Stinkweed birthed a tiny little colt - he measures about 23" at the withers . Thats the part where the end of the mane meets the shoulder. The little fella has such an outgoing personality. He's totally fearless, but then he hasn't met the big guys yet.....

The inevitable hay bales painting. Round here, all landscape artists do one at some point. The bales have great appeal with their golden color against a blue sky, with green grass blades poking up around. This one is 11" x 14" on canvas board.

Rock N Roll Highway Painting

It's been a very busy month. August, I mean. Our gallery show is on going, and lots to do around the farm, so painting time has been almost rationed away. However, I have managed to do one for the upcoming 50's celebration in Pocahontas AR, 27 September. I bought an old wooden ironing board at our junk auction, covered it with canvas, and spent days researching the era. The theme for the 50's Art Show is 'Rock N' Roll Highway , which just happens to be part of the route we take each week between the farm in Hardy, and our house in Newport. There is absolutely nothing spectacular or interesting about the highway any more. It used to be the route that folks like Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Conway Twitty, Billy Lee Riley, and Sonny Burgess took on their way to Sun Studios in Memphis . Back then, the Highway was littered with little night clubs, and these soon to be giants of the music world would stop and do a gig to earn a few bucks. Some of these clubs including the King of Clubs in Swifton, are still in operation and in the business of featuring new talent. With this in mind, I chose the King of Clubs on Highway 67 for my painting

The last plein aire for June, of Wahpiton Arch. It measures 8" x 10" in oils on panel. Further up the hill are several beautiful old cottages, and the grounds where the Old Wahpeton Hotel used to stand. The grounds are landscaped, and sit over Loburg Park in Hardy.

A new painting and a painting re-visited

I'm fooling around with this painting, as the colt was lost in a mass of colors. I love that but it's hard on the eye, and some what incorrect. Going to do a little more to it to pull it together better, and get rid of the slight 'halo' effect.

Got this one finished late last night. It is 18" x 23" on stretched canvas, and entitled 'Tails High'.

One of my very favorite places as a kid was the Ford, River Ouse, in Clapham. We fished and waded and rode the riding school ponies in it.It looked nothing like this then, of course. It was much bigger, and more assessable. Everything is bigger when you're a kid.

What a lark ! Got the tractor stuck, then unstuck, and moved hay around just to aggravate the horsey' s. No better fun than this. Tomorrow, back to the grind. Working on an acrylic painting, and an oil - one semi-abstract, and the other a landscape.

Birdie and Feather - acrylic painting

Christmas time does have something to do with Donkey's doesn't it ? We acquired a little miniature donkey earlier on in the year, and named her Birdie, after 'Mine that Bird', the thoroughbred who won the Kentucky derby this year. Here is my first acrylic painting of Birdie and baby. I have not touched acrylics for a while, and enjoyed the speed at which I was able to work with these instant dry paints.

New project - found a grey plastic carousel horse, and decided to make him pretty. Glued little horse pictures all over, and torn masking tape for the saddle and hooves. Here he is, all finished. A conversation piece.

Has it really been a month.....?

Time has been slipping away. I've finished about 7 paintings this month, mostly for ebay, but the one above, measuring aprox. 12" by 18" is headed to a show at Boplar Bluff Missouri. I like the way the colors turned out in this one.
Three shows opened and closed this October, and I entered all of them. It's a bit daunting to stick your work out there and then hold your breath to see if anyone likes it. I got lucky with 5 of my paintings - awards of one sort or another. But that is all it is, luck. Another judge another day for the 'plein aire with horse' painting above. It's entitled 'Bringing it on Home' by the way.

Down on the river bank

Met up with friends this past Friday, down on the banks of the Spring River. It was a beautiful sunny day, reflections bouncing off the water - great day to paint. A heron flew by several times, but never stopped long enough to get himself into our paintings.

Afterwards, we had lunch at the corner booth. There is a doll in there, up high on a dusty shelf thats the spitting image of my Mother. It looks down on me while I eat with a little quirk on it's face.

My recently finished painting 'Turf'. Measures a huge 32" x 40" on stretched canvas. I love going to the races, and have a few rolls of film - this painting is actually a composite from a couple of photo's. I killed the color, then reinvented it.

Leaf

Recently, our pleine air group went to the little town of Evening Shade to paint. Some of us ended up in a beautiful garden full of foliage and flowers - I didn't wander far from the Elephant Ears. They were huge, and the patterns within the leaves proved too much at one sitting. I finished this at home, but don't think I came close to the delicate beauty of patterns and shades.

'Wilds of Camp'

July - Family Month

July was 'family month'. Lots of touring, enjoying the great outdoors and of course eating fabulous home cooking, staying up too late, and chatting. I just didn't feel the urge to paint, so I concentrated on making stretchers for canvas during any down time that presented itself. The day after we dropped everybody off at the airport in Little Rock, I attended an artist workshop. I'm not very good at workshops presented by professionals. There is no method to my painting madness, or just one I have cooked up along the way, and professionals give workshops to teach folks how to do things their way. I end up feeling claustrophobic and stupid. All of my painting friends were there so I attempted to hide in the corner, but no luck. I was an instructor magnet. After I got home, I cleaned off my canvas and started again, using the techniques as taught. Here are the results. Painting titled ' Wilds of Camp'.

Friends and I met to do some painting at a spot overlooking our town of Hardy, and the beautiful Spring River. There were several little cottages, some of them dating back to the 1920's, with names like 'Breeze Inn, Stumble Inn, Gone Inn'. Apparently the mafia used them for vacation back in the day. The elderly owners were wonderfully hospitable, and invited us back again !

Razzmatazz was a tiny colt when I got him at 3 months old. He is now 15. My first horse and every bodies favorite goof ball.

We had a very busy 2 weeks, sight seeing, riding the horses, and clearing some of the recent storm damage. Billy did a lot of repairs at the farm, and can be seen here shimmying up a tree to cut it down. Charlotte posed on request

Fooling about in the feed shed, I spilled some house paint. What a mess. Rather than waste it, I painted everything in sight, plus smeared it on 3 old canvas's.

Finally finished this big 24" x 36", oil on stretched canvas. The most difficult part was the bicycle tires. They had that 'run over by a mac truck look about them - all wobbly. Hope Lauren likes it.

Artists of the Delta Show

This weekend I loaded a few paintings into the truck and headed for the Newport Depot for the very first Delta Artists show.
The Clinton School is funding a Delta Visual Arts Center, with all kinds of good stuff, such as a gallery, work space for artists, and workshops. As our area of the world is a little devoid of places to exhibit paintings, but has no shortage of folks churning them out, this is a very marvelous idea.
So off to the show I went, lucky me. My set up was next to the podium .
I met many talented people, and chatted with various guests. The work that I do is more fulfilling when people connect with it, and relate in some way, which many did. As well as good company and lots of visitors we had lunch provided. For the evening reception with dignitaries, hors d'oeuvres and wine. To top it all off, the graduate student who headed up the project was awarded my painting 'Considering Blue', which she had chosen as a favorite piece. All in all, a day well spent.

Finally finished this one. Some paintings just take off and paint themselves, and this was one of them - everything went down without a struggle.The dog is front with the pointy ears is Rimshot, with his friend Chigga Boom. Rimshot doesn't care who he sleeps with. Cuddled up next to his nose is the current favorite stuffed toy. Soon, all the stuffing will be gone. It's a dogs life.

I made the canvas for this one - measures aprox 23" x 26", and is down to finishing touches. I'll post a better photo after it's done.

'Peace' depicts Chigga Boom and Trickshot, the Jack Russells at peace before the fight. It is the first of 3 theme paintings.

Morning Glory's in February

Morning Glory's. I managed to finish the third painting this month, in spite of the weather. This will be all of the Morning Glory's till they bloom again in Spring. I really didn't think I'd have time to finish the last painting ( 16" x 20"), due to the ice storm, a couple of weeks ago. Tree limbs fell like rain under the weight of the ice. Still, in spite of all the wood clearing that needs to be done, I had to take some time out to paint. So here they are, Mornig Glory's in February !

My daughter Lauren is so sweet. She lives in Portland OR, and gets around on a bike ( obviously missing in the painting) - I asked if I could experiment with colors and use her as a subject and she was game. She is an excellent artist , so understands my weird requests. I started the painting a couple of days ago - it's a whopping 35"x25", and I have about 3 hours in so far. Lots of paint too. I'll let it set, and throw on the color next - last will come the fine tuning.......

All of my paintings have a purpose. They stem from 3 things :-
Hard work, inspiration and communication.
My last painting painting took hours - -perhaps 100 ? That's the work part.
More important is the inspiration. I paint things that I love, animals, people, flowers. Love is to do with liking and understanding what I'm painting. The character or nature of what I paint. With animals and people, I try to capture the 'essence' of the personality and to represent that faithfully in my work.
When you look at one of my paintings, if you connect with it in some way, and like what you see, then I have succeeded.
